Tips & Maintenance
Maintaining Your Aluminium Windows and Doors: A Practical Guide
Aluminium windows and doors are chosen for their durability and low maintenance — but "low maintenance" does not mean "no maintenance." A simple annual care routine will keep your systems performing well and looking good for decades.
Cleaning the Frames
Aluminium frames should be cleaned every three to six months with a mild detergent solution and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, and solvent-based products — these can damage the powder coat finish and void warranties.
In coastal areas or near industrial sites, more frequent cleaning is advisable. Salt deposits and airborne pollutants accelerate corrosion if left to accumulate.
Cleaning the Glass
Use a standard glass cleaner or a solution of warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid. For exterior glass on upper floors, professional window cleaning every six to twelve months is recommended — both for safety and to preserve the glass coating.
Lubricating Hardware
Door and window hinges, locks, and sliding track rollers should be lubricated annually. Use a silicone-based lubricant — never grease or oil-based products, which attract dust and can degrade rubber seals over time.
- Apply silicone spray to hinge pins and pivot points
- Clean and lubricate sliding tracks with silicone spray
- Check and adjust door lock striker plates annually
- Replace worn weather seals as soon as they show signs of cracking or compression set
When to Call a Professional
If you notice draughts around closed windows, water ingress during rain, condensation between the glass panes, or difficulty operating hardware, contact a qualified installer. These are signs that seals, hardware, or the glazing unit itself may need attention — and early repair is always cheaper than late-stage remediation.
